Accelerating the Restoration of Seagrass Meadows in the Mediterranean area through Innovative ecosystem-service based Solutions

ARTEMIS set out to restore and conserve seagrass meadows in the Mediterranean by developing innovative restoration protocols and integrating the value of ecosystem services into financial and policy frameworks. Over its lifetime, the project worked with public authorities, research centres, NGOs and SMEs across four transnational pilot sites. It has now concluded its activities, leaving the Mediterranean community with a set of tools, evidence and recommendations ready to be used. Explore them below.

1.2 million hectares of seagrass meadows span the Euro-MED coastlines. Despite their importance, seagrasses are often overlooked, with nearly 7% lost annually due to fish farming, bottom trawling, anchoring, coastal erosion, and nutrient runoff.

ARTEMIS was designed to reverse this trend by combining advanced restoration techniques with innovative Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) schemes, so that the financial and societal benefits of seagrass would be reflected in public and private policies and investments.

Four transnational pilot projects, in Menorca, Sardinia, Monfalcone and Crete, brought together public authorities, research centres, NGOs and SMEs at every stage, from transplantation to enhancement and policy development.
