ARTEMIS – Mapping Seagrass Restoration in the Mediterranean
Seagrass meadows, particularly those formed by Posidonia oceanica, are among the Mediterranean’s most vital ecosystems and among its most threatened. Across the region, dozens of projects are working to restore, protect, and better understand these underwater forests. Until now, that work has been scattered across institutions, countries, and reports.
Not anymore.
As part of ARTEMIS, project partner and leader Plan Bleu has developed an interactive map that brings together seagrass initiatives from across the Mediterranean Sea in a single, easy-to-navigate tool. Zoom in on a country, click on a project, and discover its story: what stage it’s at, who’s behind it, and what it has achieved so far from early-stage assessments to completed restoration efforts. ARTEMIS itself features on the map alongside the many other initiatives working to protect Mediterranean seagrass.
This resource is designed to help researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and the public alike see the bigger picture: the scale of seagrass restoration efforts underway across the region, and how individual projects connect to a shared, Mediterranean-wide effort.

This map was developed by Plan Bleu as part of the ARTEMIS project (Interreg Euro-MED Programme), a collaborative initiative bringing together research institutes, municipalities, and environmental organisations to explore, document, and support seagrass restoration across the Mediterranean.
