Last week in Kotor, Montenegro, ARTEMIS was presented at a regional training on Nature- based Solutions for coastal adaptation by our lead partner Plan Bleu.
The purpose of the event, which was arranged under the direction of the GEF MedProgramme project, was to assist Montenegro in tackling the difficulties associated with coastal adaptation by means of creative solutions.
A summary of ARTEMIS and the ongoing work at pilot sites was given by Insa Behrens Integrated Coastal Management, from Plan Bleu. She concentrated on two important ecosystem services and methodologies: the EBQI Index, which is used to assess biodiversity, and Blue Carbon, which highlights the crucial role that seagrass meadows play in sequestering carbon.
At ARTEMIS, we focus on accelerating the restoration of Posidonia seagrass meadows across the Euro-Mediterranean region. Our mission is to integrate the societal and economic value of the ecosystem services provided by these meadows into policies, innovative restoration techniques, and financial mechanisms such as Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES). Through collaborative efforts with 10 project partners and 3 associated partners, we aim to drive public and private investments that support both ecological and economic sustainability (read more)
The inclusion of ARTEMIS in this regional forum on NbS for coastal adaptation underscores the project’s relevance in addressing coastal resilience and the broader climate crisis. The methodologies presented at the event not only showcase ARTEMIS scientific and technical contributions but also highlight its role in supporting policymakers, local stakeholders, and coastal communities in adapting to climate-related challenges.
