The Mediterranean is Breathing: Announcing ARTEMIS, the Documentary Series on Underwater Forests

19/03/2026

The sea is more than what we see on the surface; it is a blue lung pulsing in the deep. After a year of filming across the most precious seabeds of our basin, the trailer for ARTEMIS is finally here—a documentary series chronicling the mission to regenerate seagrass meadows and the vital role of Nature-based Solutions.

One Journey, Four Stories of Recovery

Produced by EjaTV with the coordination of the MEDSEA Foundation, the series is more than a nature documentary; it is a field diary of an unprecedented environmental restoration effort. ARTEMIS unfolds across four pilot sites where science meets action:

The release of the trailer is just the beginning. We have designed a storytelling journey in 5 chapters to take you into the heart of our restoration efforts:

  • 4 Pilot Documentaries: Each site—Crete, Menorca, Sardinia, and Monfalcone—will have its own dedicated episode. We will dive deep into the specific local challenges, the stories of the people on the front lines, and the scientific results of each restoration site.

  • The Full Journey (June 2026): The final, feature-length documentary—a comprehensive and emotional synthesis of the entire ARTEMIS voyage across the Mediterranean—will be officially released in June.

Crete: From Degradation to Recovery

For over 20 years, a fish farm in the Atzikiari Bay – north east of the Crete Island – contributed to the decline of the local Posidonia. ARTEMIS follows the cleanup of the seafloor—removing aquaculture leftovers—and the “surgical” transplantation of healthy shoots to kickstart the bay’s recovery.

Menorca: A Meadow Lost for 15 Years

A bentonite spill during the construction of a desalination plant destroyed 1,800 $m^2$ of seagrass in Cala Blanca, Menorca, Spain. After 15 years, natural recovery has only reached 5%. ARTEMIS is stepping in to accelerate time, using active restoration to bring back an ecosystem that protects the coastline from erosion.

Sardinia: Restoring Posidonia in the Capo Testa – Punta Falcone MPA

In the heart of Northern Sardinia, the challenge is balancing world-class tourism with conservation. The series documents the delicate work of divers transplanting Posidonia oceanica and the installation of third-generation sustainable mooring buoys to prevent anchor damage in this 5,200-hectare sanctuary.

Monfalcone: Restoring Cymodocea in a Crowded Coastline

In the Northern Adriatic, the “cousin” of Posidonia—Cymodocea nodosa—is the protagonist. In a heavily human-impacted area, ARTEMIS is testing a Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) model, where boating associations contribute to the maintenance of ecological moorings, turning users into guardians.

Beyond Restoration: Investing in our Future

The message of ARTEMIS is powerful and urgent: “The best time to invest in restoration was 50 years ago. The second best time is now.”

The project doesn’t just plant seagrass; it bridges the gap between ecology and economy through Nature Credits and Blue Credits. It’s not a traditional financial investment—it’s an investment in the “services” nature provides, from oxygen production to carbon storage. As the documentary highlights, every second breath we take comes from the Mediterranean’s underwater forests.
