As part of the EU’s broader effort to close the biodiversity financing gap and mobilise additional resources beyond public funding, the European Commission launched the “Roadmap Towards Nature Credits”, an initiative exploring how nature protection and restoration can be supported through private finance and robust, science-based crediting schemes. On September 30th, 2025, the ARTEMIS project, in collaboration with its partner The Green Tank, submitted a joint contribution to the European Commission’s public consultation on the Roadmap, welcoming its potential while stressing the need for strong governance, scientific integrity, and transparency.
This contribution is particularly relevant to ARTEMIS, as the project is actively developing pathways to bridge the gap between seagrass restoration and sustainable financing through Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) schemes. By drawing on the project’s pilot actions and policy work, ARTEMIS provided targeted recommendations to ensure that emerging nature credit frameworks effectively support the restoration of Posidonia oceanica meadows and other blue carbon habitats. In this context, the Roadmap represents a promising opportunity to complement public funding rather than replace it by unlocking additional private investment for biodiversity, while ensuring that restoration efforts remain credible, measurable, and aligned with long-term ecological outcomes.
