On 30 January 2026, the European Commission hosted a webinar on Nature Credits for the EU’s Coastal and Marine Ecosystems, as part of the consultation process on the Roadmap on Nature Credits, published in July 2025.
This workshop focused specifically on coastal and marine ecosystems. Its objective was to take stock of what has already been done, assess what has worked, and identify what is still needed to develop transparent criteria and methodologies that prevent risks and ensure integrity on both the supply and demand side.
During the webinar, the European Commission shared that 225 submissions were received in response to the Roadmap consultation which ARTEMIS has also contributed to last september by submitting feedback to the consultation.
The session provided an opportunity to present concrete initiatives to a broad audience of policymakers, practitioners, researchers and private actors engaged in shaping the future of nature credits in Europe.
Our project was introduced by the lead partner, Arnaud Terisse (Plan Bleu), who highlighted ARTEMIS as an initiative building a credible and investable pathway for scaling up seagrass restoration across Europe.
During the webinar, Arnaud Terisse presented the project’s four pilot sites in Crete(Greece), Monfalcone(Italy), Sardinia(Italy), Menorca(Spain), which serve as real-world laboratories to test restoration approaches, governance models and innovative financing mechanisms.
He outlined ARTEMIS’ core objective: to demonstrate that seagrass restoration can be upscaled by securing additional funding through Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) and Nature Credits schemes. , ARTEMIS is building a comprehensive pathway for investment into seagrass restoration and conservation, combining science, policy, finance and stakeholder engagement.
ARTEMIS seeks to prove that large-scale restoration is not only environmentally necessary, but also financially viable and strategically investable. | Arnaud Terisse, Plan Bleu
Among its expected results, ARTEMIS will:
-
Upscale passive and active restoration measures, while identifying concrete financing options to support long-term expansion of seagrass restoration efforts.
-
Provide knowledge and practical tools for practitioners, decision-makers and private actors to design and implement robust seagrass restoration projects.
-
Deliver recommendations to corporate stakeholders on how to integrate seagrass ecosystem services into their investment portfolios.
-
Develop an awareness-raising framework enabling a wide range of stakeholders to communicate effectively about the ecological, climate and socio-economic benefits of seagrass ecosystems.
By combining restoration practice with innovative finance and policy guidance, ARTEMIS positions seagrass ecosystems at the heart of Europe’s emerging nature credit landscape. The project demonstrates that protecting and restoring coastal blue carbon ecosystems can become a strategic pillar of sustainable investment delivering benefits for biodiversity, climate mitigation and coastal communities alike.
